WeatherBug Schools Classroom Connections
Weather and Football— December 2010
Dear Educator,

Winter officially begins today according to the astronomical calendar, but old-man winter has been providing a pre-season rampage on the snow-suffocated northern Plains, the Upper Midwest and western New York . Another winter wallop is dumping even more snow from the Dakotas into Minnesota making sure to break early-season snowfall records for Minneapolis. Through December 15, Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport had seen 34 inches of snow, making it the snowiest start to winter since 1991.

That same snowfall broke more than just records, it broke the roof of the Metrodome in Minneapolis, forcing it to collapse, see video. The Minnesota Vikings were forced to play their first outdoor NFL home game in Minneapolis in 28 years.

The Vikings realize that playing in the elements does provide a strategic advantage for one team. Please join WeatherBug Meteorologist Bay Scroggins in this month's video lesson as he visits the Minnesota Vikings and asks Adrian Peterson, Greg Camarillo and other NFL players just how weather affects the game of football. The video can be viewed in Windows Media Player or in QuickTime.

Thanks for reading this month's issue of Classroom Connections. We at WeatherBug wish all the teachers and students a happy and warm holiday season.
